Tips For A Successful Nannyshare

START WITH THE BASICS
A successful nannyshare will require similarities in parenting styles, children’s needs and job descriptions. It also requires compromise. Perhaps your child naps at 11am and the other child naps at 1pm. It will be best, then, to create a brand new schedule and have both children nap at noon.

BE TRUTHFUL
For a good match both families need to be honest about their needs. Especially if these needs require accommodation by the other family (i.e. food allergies) or if certain behavioral conditions exist (i.e. a child bites or hits). Open communication is essential so that the children get a good match of playmates.

PROVIDE THE RIGHT SET-UP
Make sure that both homes have adequate set-ups. Extra highchairs, port-a-cribs, toys, a double-stroller, etc. are all essential to making sure that the children are comfortable at both homes.

MONEY MATTERS
Agree ahead of time that each family will pay the nanny’s salary regardless of whether they cancel due to sickness, holiday or vacation. Decide on a termination compensation package or a specified amount of notice for when one family decides to end the nannyshare relationship.

WHAT’S EATING YOU?
Discuss meals and snacks and decide if those costs will be shared. Decide on what constitutes a healthy snack ahead of time and if extras, like juice, will be served.

HAVE A SICKNESS POLICY
Set a policy about illness to not expose both families. Keep children separate during times of fever, vomiting, diarrhea or other contagious illnesses.

BE PROFESSIONAL
Keep a warm but professional relationship with your nanny. Do not make her a confident in your personal problems or talk to her about the other family. They are her employer, too!
